George Tiger sits on Haskell board for 27 years. Where are the term limits ?
George Tiger a Creek Nation tribal council member and currently President of Haskell’s Board of Regents wants to scuttle new UNIVERSITY programs at Haskell so that the Board CAN TRAVEL MORE.
In an open meeting, Mr. Tiger (CERTIFICATE degree holder from Haskell) announced that the Board needs to meet four times a year.
This is the equivalent of one (1) full time faculty member’s salary.
The Board has soo much to contribute to Haskell: Let’s look at the minutes and see how busy there schedules were.
With this new travel and the dialogue sessions, Haskell could fund two or three of the employees the Union keeps fussing about. But the Union is noticeably quiet about this proposal. Politics makes strange bedfellows.
Reminds me of another common saying…..something about the blind leading. Questions we need answered from Mr. Tiger :
1.
When was the last time you actually reported to the group you claim to represent? The eastern tribes of Oklahoma. Do any of the tribal chairman realize you speak for all of them? The Cherokees have the largest group of students on campus and yet for TWENTY-SEVEN years, the Cherokee Nation is represented by George Tiger. Where are the term limits ?
2.
Have you EVER shared a copy of your report to your affiliated group with other Board of Regents members or ANYONE at Haskell?
3.
What are the chances that anyone in the eastern tribes of Oklahoma realizes that you are their appointee? I only ask because I can name half a dozen members of these tribes who hold doctoral degrees and who have the experience and credentials to actually be appointed to the board of a University (there’s at least two who live in Lawrence).
4.
When was the last time you had a FEDERAL CLEARANCE to be on Haskell’s campus? Everyone else who is directly affiliated with Haskell, INCLUDING students who work ten hours a week, need to have a warrant clearance.
George Tiger told the dialogue session attendees that he lobbied for Haskell every chance he got. Since Haskell has not had a budget increase in YEARS, I am thinking he isn’t very good at it. But isn’t that his real job? Lobbyist?
Oh, ask Dr. Warner what happens when you ask a question that includes accountability and Board in the same sentence and since Dr.Warner is still Haskell’s President was she allowed time herself to travel back for these meetings ? If not could the Board meetings be legally held ?
Who at the BIE actually hold’s the board accountable for what they are suppose to be doing ? Stephanie Birdwell – Bighorn ?
Here’s an idea why don’t the tribes fund their representatives travel and per diem and leave Haskell’s money for the students where it is much needed.
Question of the day:
What did the Haskell Board of Regents spend more time discussing in their two day session?
New programs for students?
Student issues, such as health and safety?
Strategic planning? Wrong.
They wanted to know where their checks were and why they couldn’t get paid before they traveled.
I guess they still haven’t figured out : Haskell isn’t their own little project but actually is a University that has finance regulations.
It will be interesting to see if Mike Lewis can figure out a way to accommodate his new found friends.

I have these suggestions:
1. All board members MUST hold a master’s or above.
2. All board members MUST pass the background checks that
even the students must under go.
3. All board members MUST report to The President of Haskell about the progress they are making and or working on to make Haskell a better learning University.
4. Term limits, Term limits, Term limits. I say no more then 3-4 years that’s it.
5. All board members must report back to their regions once a month on their progress and make those reports open and public where the students can find them.
6. Any board member who suggest that Haskell have certificate programs clearly does not understand the meaning of University and needs to be replaced immediately ( they can go sit on a junior college board somewhere ).
7. Their agenda needs to be clearly mapped out out before they get to Haskell. They really shouldn’t have to be going into executive sessions, ALL of the board meetings need to be open to the public/ students at all times.

Nope, Defender. How can someone serve as a BoR without experience in higher education?
The BoR seem to be interested in serving because it gives them something to do. They listen to the wrong people and Tiger is one of the worst offenders.

I heard all this before and agree completely that something must be done but it never is. Accountability is never a bad thing and all involved should have no problem making themselves accountable to those they serve. Also, I believe that 27 years is too long and term limits are in order.

Thank -You, Defender. Something has to be done. The Bureau of Indian Education needs to jump in. Replace Stephanie Birdwell and The Haskell Board of Regents along with her.
